Polychromasia is the occurence of erythrocytes with a striking bluish color in the blood film. Immature erythrocytes with a high RNA content are responsible for this phenomenon. Polychromatophilic erythrocytes are usually identical to reticulocytes.
Occurrence:
Polychromasia occurs in accelerated erythropoiesis, for example in severe blood loss or hemolysis.
