Elliptocytes
Definition:
Elliptocytes are, as the name implies, elliptical-shaped erythrocytes.
Occurrence:
Elliptocytes occur naturally in an inherited autosomal-dominant disorder, elliptocytosis, which is rare occurring in only 0.02-0.05% of the population, and is associated with hemolysis in only 10% of the cases.
It can be acquired in iron deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, thalassemia and leukemia.
